Mental well-being for children
is of utmost importance in
today’s testing times
Any person can be exposed to many issues and adverse life experiences – from academic and social pressure, bullying, family breakdown, poverty, violence, dysfunctional families and now Covid!
In the long run, these experiences are very likely to cause emotional, physical and mental health problems.
While there is greater awareness of mental health issues affecting children and adolescents, the impact on the child’s everyday life and future is still highly underestimated.
Some children can understand their own feelings, verbalise how they feel and find way to manage them. They develop the ability to understand the emotional state of others. However, others may not be able to learn this and it becomes difficult for such children to self-regulate their emotions and behaviours. This further creates the inability to develop social skills which are important in building friendships and meaningful relationships. A limitation that often is protracted into adulthood.
Counseling is a scientific process where a qualified professional works with a client and/or a group of clients, to empower them to empower themselves.
Counseling is not advice or suggestion; however both can be a part of the process if needed. It is applicable to people of all ages and socioeconomic classifications except those who have severe psychological issues, for whom counselors work with psychiatrists to help the client.
Just as how we visit doctors, physiotherapists and spas for our physiological well-being, we can visit counselors for our psychological and emotional wellbeing as well.
In a world that is almost constantly demanding the utmost of our capabilities, counseling is an essential tool to help us not only protect our peace, but also to help us enhance our strengths. It is important to remember that we don’t have to do everything by ourselves and that there are trained and experienced professionals who can help us take care of our processing in an efficient manner.
Counseling is not only to deal with problems, but to also capitalize on your strengths. These strengths are often not clearly known even to ourselves and through the process of exploration and assessments, they are brought into our awareness. From here, it becomes possible for us to shape our lives in a way that can help us approach the same challenge from more advantageous positions.
How do we evaluate if we need counseling? The first thing to understand is, there does not need to be a huge problem in order to visit a Counselor. Prevention is better than cure.
That said, the following are signs that tell you that you might need counseling:
Our counsellors are mental health specialists, who offer invaluable insight into a child or adult’s social and emotional development and mental health. It is important to understand that many times ‘glitches’ in these areas may not be visible to the people closest to the individual. That is where counsellors come in.
We generally prefer face-to-face counselling. You may either approach us as a parent or directly as a child.
